Organic

One of the advantages of growing plants amongst the Radnorshire hills is that our isolated position and its healthy environment reduce the pest and disease risks. By having a mixed livestock farm and using long rotations we can keep the soil in optimum condition which helps reduce plant stress.

Growing Tips

Learned from our experience in the organic growing of soft fruit plants...

Choice of variety
There are much improved varieties nowadays with inbred resistance to some of the problems associated with growing soft fruit. eg Mildew can be a avoided, just by choosing a resistant variety.

Weed control
We have experimented with many types of weed control. Straw mulches, plastic mulches, flame weeders, cultivators of all types and sizes, and they all have their place in the field situation but we still come back to using the hoe to help out. We find the Wolf push/pull hoe to be by far the best for most situations. It is quick, robust and very satisfying!

Organic fertilisers
It is important to have your soil in a good working condition before starting. Get the pH to around 6 if at all possible. If you can, check phosphorus and potassium levels, but if you are not that technical then an application of calcified seaweed and some well rotted compost is always a good idea.
We are lucky to have plenty of composted FYM on our farm, but in offlying fields we still have to buy in some replacement nutrition. We use Laws organic fertilisers on the organic ground which feeds the soil which then feeds the plant.

We have also found the foliar feeds to be excellent. We have used seaweed based organic products on all plants and also garlic extracts which have been excellent. They feed the plant, reduce any stress and also makes the plant unpalatable to a lot of insect life!
