STRAWBERRY PLANTS (PHPS Elite certificate)

We use Foundation grade parent plants to multiply up our own stocks to ensure that we have complete control from the earliest stage in the production cycle. Being grown at altitude and having unique isolation we can supply top quality, fresh dug plants from late October until early May. All plants have been PHPS inspected this year and are sold as certified ‘Elite’ or 'A Grade' stocks.

Early Strawberry Varieties
*CHRISTINE - very early season
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd week June until 2nd week July, peaking at end of June)
ORGANIC
A new early variety that produces a firm, large and bright orange-red berry with excellent flavour. It is the only early variety to have resistance to Verticillium Wilt, and it also has good mildew resistance, but it can be susceptible to crown rot and red core. May need fleecing to protect early fruit.

HONEOYE - early
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd week June until 2nd week July, peaking at end of June)
ORGANIC
Still the main early variety that has a good upright growing habit. It seems to perform particularly well in the north and the west. Lovely flavoured fruit, great for freezing, but best picked regularly. Can sometimes be susceptible to mildew when under stress. Suitable for protected cropping.

Mid Strawberry Varieties
HAPIL - mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: End June until 2nd/3rd week July, peaking 1st week July)
ORGANIC
Heavy yields of large, glossy, sweet fruit and an upright growing habit. Crops especially well on lighter soils and in drier conditions. Can occasionally be susceptible to mildew and also to verticillium wilt. Suitable for protected cropping.

*PEGASUS - mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd/4th week June until 4th week July, peaking 1st/2nd week July)
ORGANIC
Probably one of the best disease resistant mid season varieties, preferring slightly heavier soils. High quality, excellent flavour and juicy fruit. Has excellent resistance to wilt, crown rot and red core, and some susceptibility to mildew.

CAMBRIDGE FAVOURITE - mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until 2nd week July, peaking 1st week July)
ORGANIC
One of the well known older varieties, still earning its place because of its reliability and tolerance. It makes a good beginner variety. The fruit is paler than the modern varieties but the juiciness and sweet flavour makes it a favourite for many, and it's great for jam making. Its dense growing habit makes it more susceptible to botrytis in wet seasons.

Late Mid Strawberry Varieties
*ALICE - late mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until 4th week July, peaking 1st/2nd week July)
ORGANIC
Bred at HRI East Malling, it is a few days earlier than Symphony and Florence and has a very long picking season. The plant has an upright habit and has excellent disease resistance particularly to wilt and crown rot and seems to have good mildew resistance too. The fruit are large, firm, sweet and juicy and evenly sized. Alice looks very promising for organic growing.

*ELEGANCE - NEW! - late mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd week June until 1st week August. Peaking 1st week July)
ORGANIC
Produces high yields of attractive, sweet, firm, bright and juicy berries with good shape. It has some resistance to crown rot and Verticillium wilt, but can be susceptible to mildew. This variety gives high yields and is especially suitable for 60-day cropping with plants supplied out of coldstore.

Late Strawberry Varieties
*SYMPHONY - late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd/4th week June until 4th week July, peaking 1st/2nd week July)
ORGANIC
High yielding, vigorous, Scottish late season variety producing high quality bright red firm fruit with excellent flavour. The plants have very good disease resistance, especially against red core, and also vine weevil. Can be susceptible to mildew. A good choice for the west and north, it seems to excel in the damper conditions. An excellent choice for organic growers. Suitable for protected cropping.

*FENELLA - late
(ESTIMATE: 4th week June until end July, peaking 2nd/3rd week July)
ORGANIC
A vigorous compact upright plant, which produces large bright berries with uniform shape, excellent sweet flavour, and juicy too. The fruit has very good weather resistance - it can survive in a wet summer! It has very good resistance to Verticillium wilt and crown rot, but can be susceptible to mildew. Sounds promising for organic growing.

*FLORENCE - late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until end July, peaking 2nd/3rd week July)
ORGANIC
An East Malling variety with outstanding, vigorous plants showing excellent disease resistance, especially against mildew, and also wine weevil and rabbits! Large, bright, firm but juicy, red berries with an excellent flavour. A must for the organic grower. Does well in drier and hotter areas and/or seasons.

Very Late Strawberry Varieties
*SOPHIE - very late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 1st week July until 1st week August, peaking 3rd/4th week July)
ORGANIC
A very late summer variety (late July - early August) from HRI East Malling that can usefully extend the season. A dense foliage but with high yields of well presented, good quality fruit, dark red in colour. Can be susceptible to mildew and some soil-borne diseases. We have found this an excellent growing variety.

*JUDIBELL - exceptionally late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd week July until 2nd/3rd week August, peaking start August)
ORGANIC
Even later than Sophie, Judibell has a unique cropping slot which extends the picking season well into August. Plants have good disease resistance to verticillium wilt and crown rot, but some susceptibility to mildew. The plant produces sweet, juicy berries with uniform shape. Because of its late season, this plant remains dormant until May. Great for organic growing.

Everbearing Strawberry Varieties
*MALLINGTM PEARL - everbearer
(ESTIMATE KENT: 1st/2nd week July onwards)
ORGANIC
We are pleased to be offering an everbearer again. Malling Pearl is a vigorous plant that produces a large, attractive sweet and very juicy light red fruit from July to September. It has some disease resistance to mildew, but can be susceptible to verticillium wilt and crown rot where this is already in the soil. Needs a good home. **OUT OF STOCK THIS SEASON**

Early Raspberry Varieties
GLEN MOY - early
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd week June until 3rd/4th week July, peaking 1st week July)
CONVENTIONAL
Still the earliest raspberry available, with fruiting starting in mid June producing high class fruit. Firm berries with good flavour. The canes are spine free, and resistant to aphid but susceptible to root rot. Needs careful establishment and a good home to excel, and good free draining soil to do well.

*MALLING MINERVA - early mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until 3rd/4th week July, peaking 2nd week July)
CONVENTIONAL
A new selection from East Malling, Minerva is a spine free easy to manage cane with a compact habit. It has excellent disease resistance especially against Bushy Dwarf virus (RBDV) , although can be susceptible to root rot. Its fruit has an excellent sweet flavour and firm berries, a good shelf life and is easy to pick, fruiting about 5 days later than Glen Moy.

MALLING JEWEL - early mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 3rd/4th week June until 3rd/4th week July, peaking 2nd week July)
ORGANIC
This well established variety is known for its old fashioned, juicy fruit that has lovely flavour. The canes have good disease resistance and are tolerant of most conditions. Still highly recommended as a garden and an organic variety.

Mid Raspberry Varieties

*GLEN AMPLE - Mid
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until 4th week July, peaking 2nd week July)
ORGANIC
Now the most widely grown raspberry variety. Very high yields of large, bright red fleshy fruit of excellent flavour, on spine-free canes. Crops about 10 days later than Glen Moy. Being a heavy cropper, a good feeding regime is recommended. It has some tolerance to root rot, but can be susceptible to other diseases. Good for protected growing.

Late Raspberry Varieties
*GLEN DOLL - late
(ESTIMATE KENT: start July until 1st week August, peaking 3rd week July)
CONVENTIONAL
A new selection from SCRI which is spine free and has very high yields of large, bright red, firm, sweet fruit. It has a very long cropping period starting about a week later than Glen Ample continuing until early - mid August. Excellent disease resistance, and good for organic growing.

*GLEN MAGNA - late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 1st week July until 1st week August, peaking 3rd week July)
CONVENTIONAL
This variety produces very large, dark red, sweet fruit, of a good size. Several of our customers have used it successfully for showing. The canes are very strong growing and moderately spiney, with good resistance to cane diseases, especially raspberry bushy dwarf virus and root rot. Limited stocks this year.

TULAMEEN - late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 1st week July until 1st week August, peaking 2nd week July)
ORGANIC
The variety with the highest fruit quality fruit and a long picking season. Tall canes with few spines produce very large aromatic, juicy fruit. Bred in Canada it has good weather and winter hardiness, but needs a good sheltered site. Crops through July and into August.



Very Late Raspberry Varieties
*OCTAVIA - very late
(ESTIMATE KENT: 2nd week July until 2nd week August, peaking 4th week July)
ORGANIC
This new East Malling variety extends the fruiting season well into August, so is great for the school holidays, and provides a useful extension to the season, before the autumn fruiting begins. The fruit is very high quality with large firm fruit and great flavour. The canes are moderately vigorous, have very good disease resistance, although they can be susceptible to root rot. They have exceptional winter hardiness.

Autumn Raspberry Varieties
AUTUMN BLISS - autumn
(ESTIMATE KENT: 1st week August until frosts, peak late August)
ORGANIC
Easy to manage primocane with wonderful flavoured fruit of medium size, usually cropping from August until the first hard frosts. The short canes can be grown in a bed system with minimal supports. Resistant to root rot. A definite favourite!

*AUTUMN TREASURE - NEW! - autumn
(ESTIMATE KENT: 2nd week August until frosts, peak early September)
CONVENTIONAL
We are able to offer a new primocane this year, fruiting slightly later than Autumn Bliss and continuing until the Autumn frosts. The berries have good flavour, are bright in colour, and have a long conical shape. It has spineless upright canes that can be grown in a bed system with minimal supports. Disease resistance has been excellent so far.

Long Canes


Long canes are available, please enquire. Planted in the spring either under protection or in a sunny sheltered spot, with good management the canes should bring a good crop of fruit in their first summer.





BLACKCURRANT BUSHES (Grown from our own PHPS certified stocks)


We use cuttings taken from our own PHPS certified stoolbeds to grow the one and two year old bushes that we have available. All the bushes are carefully lifted and hand selected to ensure you receive quality plants. We can also supply prepared cuttings direct from the certified stoolbeds. We are pleased that this season (2008-2009), we have grown all our fruit bushes organically.

Early Blackcurrant Varieties
*BEN GAIRN - early
(ESTIMATE KENT: 4th week June until 3rd week July)
ORGANIC
The only variety that is resistant to Reversion virus, one of the main blackcurrant problems, especially in garden and allotment situations. It also has excellent resistance to foliar diseases, which makes it an ideal organic variety. It is the earliest variety to fruit, with medium sized berries, with an excellent flavour. Bred at SCRI. Ideal for areas where big bud/reversion is common.

BEN SAREK - early
(ESTIMATE KENT: end June until 3rd/4th week July)
ORGANIC
A compact bush which has heavy yields of large berries. Ideal for smaller gardens where space is limited. Excellent resistance to foliar diseases, especially to mildew. Good show variety.

ORGANIC
This variety has high yields of exceptionally large fruit, which makes easy picking. It has outstanding resistance to the foliar diseases and also to leaf curling midge, which is a big asset to the organic grower. A medium sized bush, bred at SCRI. This is a good show variety. Leave to ripen well before picking.

An exceptionally high yielding, bigbud/reversion resistant variety from SCRI. Its bushes are vigorous and tall, so need they need a sheltered site. Probably the best flavoured fruit of all our varieties. Shows good resistance against the foliar diseases.

A very high yielding variety, with a high level of disease resistance particularly to foliar problems. Has a medium sized bush with medium sized berries. Compliments our other organic selections by fruiting later. Good later season variety for organic growing. Again bred in Scotland at SCRI.

JONKHERR VAN TETS - mid
ORGANIC
A popular early redcurrant, with high yields of large berries that have a good flavour. The vigorous bushes have excellent resistance against foliar diseases. Crops on 1 and 2 year wood. Easy to grow as a bush or a cordon.

RED START - late
ORGANIC
An upright bush that gives heavy yields of medium sizes red berries that hang well for August fruit. Excellent resistance against foliar diseases and its late flowering helps to avoid any frost damage. A British-bred red currant.

ROVADA - late
ORGANIC
Very high yielding variety with long strigs of large, bright berries. Known for its large fruit. We have found this a very good organic variety to date, and it is highly recommended.

HYBRID BUSHES (Grown from our own PHPS certified stocks)

JOSTABERRY
ORGANIC
A thornless blackcurrant/gooseberry hybrid with a shiny black fruit the size of a small gooseberry. The bushes are very vigorous and resistant to big-bud and foliar diseases. They can grow to over 2.5m high so they need to be spaced 2m apart. They flower early and so need to be protected against any frosts at that time. The fruit makes beautiful jam or jelly. Very high levels of Vitamin C.
